Merengue is the national music: (June 2014)
The Chamber of Deputies has converted a bill into law declaring that merengue should be the national music of the Dominican Republic.

The bill, which was introduced by Deputy Victor Sanchez, states that it is essential to preserve and promote national music to ensure that it remains an integral part of Dominican society and helps develop the cultural identity of the Dominican people.

The Ministry of Culture will be in charge of organizing events that will ensure that Merengue is promoted as the National Music of the Dominican Republic.

Merengue has been around for over 150 years, since 26 November 1854 when it was heard for the first time in the country.
